Zhejiang University is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in China, with the latest Times Higher Education World University Ranking of 39th place. Founded in 1897 as Qiushi Academy in the city of Hangzhou, ZJU aims to advance modern education and science. In 1928, it was formally renamed as National Zhejiang University, growing into a comprehensive university with strong programs in science, engineering, agriculture, and humanities. Under the leadership of the renowned meteorologist Zhu Kezhen between 1936 and 1949, ZJU flourished and attracted a number of eminent scholars. During the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945), ZJU undertook an epic "Journey to the West", relocating over 1,000 km inland through harsh conditions to continue teaching and research. This arduous trek became legendary in the history of ZJU, symbolizing the university's resilience and commitment to scholarship. Following restructuring in 1952, some faculties were merged into other institutions. However, on September 15, 1998, a new era began with the merger of four major universities in Hangzhou into ZJU of today: the old Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University, and Zhejiang Medical University. This recreated a comprehensive, research-intensive powerhouse. Today, the revitalized ZJU stands as a member of China's elite C9 League (a league comprised of 9 top universities in China). It is globally recognized for academic excellence, cutting-edge research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. With multiple campuses in Hangzhou, ZJU educates over 60,000 students annually, driving progress in science, technology, and society while upholding its founding spirit of "Seeking Truth".
